Chickens

We have a colorful mixed flock of chickens on our farm. They are predominantly old dual-purpose breeds, including breeds that are extremely endangered, such as Augsburg chickens or barred Dominiques.

When it comes to laying performance, they are indeed not top athletes, but they are very robust and almost never get sick. Contrary to popular belief, chickens are anything but dumb. Each chicken has its own unique personality.

Our chickens may not lay the greatest number of eggs, but they are certainly the best eggs we can provide. No egg, not even a purchased Demeter egg, has shown these qualities so far. That’s why they have become a popular product among connoisseurs in the HofGut Shop.

We usually hatch the eggs on the farm. Raising the roosters to slaughter maturity is a matter of course for us. That’s why we welcome and support the commitment of the Bruderhahn Initiative. Anyone who would like to learn more about this or simply appreciates it is welcome to come to the themed evening.

For the future, we would be happy to be able to produce all our egg needs ourselves. We are currently developing concepts for this and hope to succeed.

The latter depends less on us and more on the willingness of the authorities to allow new and sustainable alternatives.
